Burn CC Reach Cup Final for First Time.

Burn CC 1st XI travelled to the edge of The Vale of York on Sunday the 4th of August to meet North Cave in the HPH Cup Semi Final playing for a place in the final of Vale League’s premier cup competition; Edward Clark reports.

With the teams early season league encounter being rained off and the opposition an unknown quantity Burn opted to bat first on a dusty wicket.  This decision looked to be a poor one when the in form Leigh Adamson (1) misjudged one early in the innings and spooned it to midwicket and opener Ray Adamson (31) and the incoming youngster Tom Rich (19) struggled to cope with the conditions.  With the average bowling receiving some assistance from the unpredictable wicket  Burn’s top order were finding the going difficult with Watson (17) Clark (23) Webster(17) all getting a start but failing to kick on.   A useful cameo from fast bowler A Prescott Jnr (29) supported by the tail closed the innings at 187 for 9 with Burn pondering if the total would be sufficient.

After the early departure of Page (1)  caught behind to a snorter from Prescott (2- 28) Cave continued in aggressive fashion with Hewson (34) and Ferguson (28 in 11 balls) in particular making a mockery of Burn’s earlier problems with the wicket.  With the powerful Ferguson at the wicket the game looked to be moving away from Burn when Smith (3-38) deceived him with a slower ball only to see the skied chance dropped by Keeper Webster unsighted by an oversized helmet.   Venting his obvious frustration the evergreen Smith duly bowled Ferguson the next delivery with a quick one.

This proved to be the turning point and with tempers still a little frayed in the middle a sharp caught and bowled by Smith and an even better one snaffled by Prescott at short cover removed other key North Cave Men.   As the pressure of the chase increased Abbott (2 for 23) and Miller turned the screw.  Assisted by some abject North Cave running Burn were able to mop up the tail quickly leaving Cave 87 runs short to take their first ever place in the final.

The final will be played at Heworth CC on Sunday 1st of August vs Hemingbrough or Fulford.

In Saturday’s league fixture Burn 1st XI outclassed an under strength Bishopthorpe to maintain pressure on Hemingbrough before next weeks crucial top of the table clash.
