York V Burn II

Burn travelled to the idyllic setting of ‘The Retreat’ for this fixture with York and with the hosts sitting just above them in the table this one had the feel of testing the Linnets’ credentials to complete for a promotion place after missing out in recent seasons. With the weather set fair and Burn’s batsmen in some form all seemed well until a heavy downpour prior to the start meant that a perfect batting surface soon became a seamer’s paradise as York’s young attack found plenty of movement and bounce. When two early wickets fell captain Crowther must have feared the worst and with some bad feeling around after veteran Geoff England had to retire hurt the initiative was firmly with the home side until an outstanding innings by Andrew Watson (57) brought some much needed control to proceedings. Jamie Bingle contributed 74 in a superbly crafted knock and Burn were able to post a more than respectable 192 all out.

            The home side soon got a taste of their own medicine as an early breakthrough by Darren Miller became a procession and at 60 odd for 8 York were staring down the barrel of a heavy defeat. Swaddle (42 not out) and Liversedge (35) then managed to salvage some pride before England restored his dignity with the crucial breakthrough wicket just as it started to look like an improbable victory for the hosts might be on the cards. But with Alex Webster completing his five wicket haul with the removal of York skipper Proctor, York were left on 128 all out and the Linnets duly claimed victory by 64 runs to leapfrog their opponents into third place in the league standings. Burn will be looking to do the same again this weekend as they take on second placed Boston Spa at Linnet Park.
