Burn II V Thorpe Willoughby II

Saturday 15th May

All kinds of records were broken for second team cricket at Burn as the Linnets notched up an impressive victory in this local derby.

Burn fielded a strong team comprised of a mixture of youth and experience against the ten men of Thorpe Willoughby. When home skipper Marc Crowther won the toss he had no hesitation in choosing to bat first on a dry looking wicket. There was little indication of what was to come as Burn’s openers scratched away against the tight bowling of Thorpe’s young duo of Mitchell and Carse and after 15 overs only a modest 50 was on the board. The wicket was proving to be past its best before date and getting the ball away was difficult at times.  An increase in bowling pace seemed to suit the experienced pairing of Lee Adamson and Martin Trevaskiss and the scoreboard began to race as Adamson in particular went on the attack. He despatched several sixes to notch up his century before duly retiring.

Not to be outdone, Trevaskiss then took up the challenge to follow suit with his own century a few overs later. With Jamie Bingle(57) coming in to join the party several balls were lost in adjacent fields and the score clicked past 250 before the first bona fide wicket was to fall when Parker was adjudged LBW. Crowther added 11 before being bowled and at tea Burn had recorded a daunting total of 295 from their 40 overs.

Thorpe, to their credit seemed unfazed by the colossal target and started brightly in reply despite the early loss of Bawker. Jackson and Priest put together a useful stand before young Jacob Webster found his aim and began to make inroads. His 4 wickets together with two more from young Luca Reddix ripped apart what little heart the opposition had left and with the other wickets being shared around Thorpe were bowled out for only 84. Burn duly took the spoils with an immense victory margin of 211 runs and go into this weekend’s cup game full of confidence.

BOO NOT OUT!

Ray "Boo" Adamson continues to be "not out" following his score off 99 not out last week. This week saw him 65 not out and push Burn 1st Team to their second win of the season over one of the favourites for the title Barmby Moor.

Despite Captain Clark losing the toss and being asked to field first Burn soon took the upper hand with fast bowler Prescott back in 1st team action pinning the hosts back with a hostile spell: returning figures of 24 for 2 off 10 overs.  Burn were creating more pressure on the Barmby Moor batsmen with energetic fielding and this showed with early wickets falling.  Barmby Moor continued to be frustrated by Burn, inparticular the evergreen Matthew Smith's consistent bowling saw him take 4 for 37 off 10 overs and could of have had more wickets but for a number of dropped catches late on in the innings.
An overall good performance from Burn in the field restricted Barmby Moor to a total of 128 for 8 off 40 overs.

Burn took to the field knowing that the wicket was lively and needed to concentrate early in the innings. Just as Burn started to look in control Clark was bowled for a duck.  Next in was the young former Selby star Tom Rich to join the experienced Adamson. The young and experienced partnership worked well with the majority of the target being accumulated by the pair. Tom ended his innings late on in the game after some superb shots caught for 43.  It was left to R Webster to hit the winning runs with Burn reaching the total in 26 overs.

Burn entertain North Duffield in the cup on Saturday at Linnett Park and also host Selby on Sunday in the Eric Smith Twenty20.

Heworth V Burn

As the song goes-it was a case of “Wake up Boo” as Burn’s season finally kicked into life with a win at Heworth’s Elm Park ground.

Burn batted first and the regular top order continued with their indifferent form and after three overs the score of 7 for 3 seemed to be making a mockery of the decision to have first use of a fairly docile pitch. Ray Adamson scratched around using a few overs in lieu of winter nets before finding some fluency and  support from Nigel Croad (12) putting on 35 for the next wicket to bring some respectability to proceedings. Adamson never looked back and certainly seemed at ease in a languid knock gaining further assistance from Ashley Abbott (28) and Gareth Beavors (11 not out).

Much though their contribution was appreciated the latter two managed to somehow contrive to deprive Adamson of the strike for the last two overs to leave him stranded on 99 but with a now half-decent score of 167 posted he didn’t seem to mind too much.

After a hearty tea Heworth came out firing on all cylinders and clearly in a hurry to try and find a result. Opener Barrat’s quick fire innings came to an abrupt end when he danced down the track once too often to be stumped by Rob Webster off the bowling of Richard Miller. The scoreboard racing round seemed to galvanise the Burn fielders and when Croad scored a direct hit to remove Heworth’s other opener the tide began to turn. Wickets fell at regular intervals with only Padwore (50 not out) putting up decent resistance. Wickets were shared around the bowling attack and Miller’s team spirit went so far as to sportingly drop the simplest of caught and bowled chances thus depriving himself of a five wicket haul just to allow Jamie Bingle to take the final wicket. Heworth were all out for 107 to give Burn victory by 60 runs.

Burn take on the altogether more challenging proposition when they travel to Barmby Moor on Saturday.

Burn II 170-7 beat Malton & Old Malton II 132 by 38 runs

Burn II returned to home comforts after a disappointing defeat the
week before at Stockton & Hopgrove.  Put into bat by the visiting
skipper the Burn openers moved the total on steadily to 50 for 0 until
vice captain Darren Miller fell for 35.

His opening counterpart Geoff England was out soon after but this
paved the way for Graeme Parker to enter the fray.  Ably assisted at
the crease by Graham Stansfield and then Marc Crowther, Parker smashed
his way to a quick fire 60, including 6 sixes, before being caught on
the boundary. The Burn middle and tail then kept the scoreboard
ticking over - reaching a respectable 170 for 7 in their 40 overs.

Malton & Old Malton were never allowed to settle at the crease as the
hosts patiently chipped away at the batting order.  Parker weighted in
with 2 for 20 from his 9 overs before the introduction of Scott 'Scud'
Adamson effectively ended any hopes of the visitors recovering. The 16
year old, making his return to the team, ripped through the middle
order, taking 3 wickets along the way.  Drew Watson, Harry Walker and
John Horsfield were outstanding in the field with impressive dives,
catches and grass stains aplenty.  14 year olds Jonny Adamson, Luca
Reddiex and Walker were then introduced to the attack to finish off
the away side for 132.

Burn II entertain local rivals Drax next Saturday at Linnet Park.

Burn V Hemingbrough

Saturday 24th April

Hard on the back of some stupendous fundraising efforts towards the end of last season, Burn’s winter preparations included the acquisition of some quality equipment including a new sight screen, practice nets and pitch covers. It was, therefore, with much anticipation that the new season opened up with a home fixture against local rivals Hemingbrough. Unfortunately for Burn ‘Brough never read the script and came away easy winners. New captain Ed Clark lost the toss and not unsurprisingly the visitors elected to bat first on a belter of a track for this time of year- testament to the superb efforts of Burn’s curators. Runs came fairly easily but with Burn claiming two early wickets it was nip and tuck early doors. Richard Millar, stepping up from the twos bowled a decent enough spell claiming the two wickets and the pace of Adam Prescott was proving a handful. Beavors and Abbott fared less well, however, and the Hemingbrough middle order started to get on top. Milburn, Clark, Slarr and Dale all cashed in with 30 plus runs apiece to make Burn’s bowling attack look decidedly ordinary. Abbott claimed three wickets but perhaps would have traded each for 15 runs to give some respectability to the total. Hemingbrough ended their allocation on 231 for 8 –a decent total but very gettable on such a good track.

Burn’s reply never properly got going against some tidy bowling and the openers were soon back in the hut one way or another. In fact a steady procession of wickets ensured that Hemingbrough never looked in danger with only Rob Webster coming out with any credit scoring a determined 46 before falling to an excellent catch. Burn’s total of 97 represented a very poor return and with the on field efforts failing miserably to match with those off it, discussion turned to the comparative merits of online auction sites. Burn travel to Wheldrake this Saturday for a second attempt to get going this season.

Stockton & Hopgrove   v   Burn 2nd XI

Burn 136-8 lost to Stockton & Hopgrove 138-6, by 4 wickets.

Burn having been put in to bat on what looked to be favourable batting conditions, didn’t capitalise on the promising foundation created by Andy Watson (49) and Will Hick. Other than some strong middle order hitting from Graham Parker (35) the remaining batsmen struggled to contribute, and the 136 total wasn’t as large as might have been hoped.

Burn’s bowlers started well, and after picking up a couple of early wickets Burn were in a healthy position at half way drinks (70-5). However Burn were again unable to capitalise on the promising start, as sensible batting from the Stockton middle order steered them home with several overs to spare.
